US President Donald Trump had earlier said that the two sides are continuing with negotiations on the trade deal.

“I am pleased to announce that India and the United States are continuing negotiations to address the trade barriers between our two nations,” Trump had posted. “I look forward to speaking with my very good friend, Prime Minister Modi, in the upcoming weeks. I feel certain that there will be no difficulty in coming to a successful conclusion for both of our great countries!”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also responded positively and expressed confidence that the talks will unlock the limitless potential of the India-US partnership.

“India and the US are close friends and natural partners,” PM Modi had posted.

Recently, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick defended Trump’s tariffs against India and criticised the country for taking advantage of the US.

At a press conference, Lutnick criticised India for not buying American corn, despite a large population, when asked whether the US was mismanaging “very valuable relationships” with “important allies” such as Brazil, China and India.

“India brags about having 1.4 billion people, but won’t buy even a small amount of American corn. Why won’t 1.4 billion people buy one bushel of US corn? Doesn’t that rub you the wrong way that they sell everything to us and they won’t buy our corn. They put tariffs on everything.”

The US has imposed 50% tariffs on India, including 25% for Delhi’s purchases of Russian oil, among the highest imposed on any country in the world.
